Hard Water Havoc: Protecting Your Hair and Skin

Hello there! Have you ever moved from a place with soft water to a place with hard water? I did, and it was quite a shock for my hair and skin. My hair, which used to be shiny, soft, and full of body, became brittle, brassy and started thinning out. Hard water can leave your hair looking dull and your skin feeling rough, like sandpaper.

Battling the havoc hard water can do on your skin and hair is tricky, but it can be done.

I've been living in Las Vegas for three years now, and I was getting frustrated with my dry and dull skin and hair. Unfortunately, getting a whole water filtration system or water softener would cost up to $30k because I live in a 1950s Mid-Century home that needs significant plumbing work. So, I had to find an affordable solution to this problem. It took some research and experimentation, but I found a way to keep things fun and affordable while dealing with hard water.

1. Invest in a Filtering Shower Head

Swapping out my regular shower head for one with a filter was a game-changer! These nifty gadgets reduce the hardness of the water, which means softer water for washing. Soft water doesn't strip away natural oils from your hair and skin, keeping them hydrated and happy. Plus, it’s like having a mini spa at home—a luxury feel without the luxury bill!

Recommendation: I really love the Cobbe Filtered Shower Head. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, and comes in a variety of finishes, but it also creates amazing water pressure in 6 different modes and makes my hair and skin feel alive again. Not only was it super easy to install, it's affordable too!

2. Opt for a Sink Fixture with a Water Filter

Just like the shower head, a filtered sink fixture keeps hard water at bay while you wash your face or hands. It’s super easy to install and works wonders in keeping your skin protected from those harsh minerals and chlorine. Hello, soft hands and face!

Recommendation: The CECEFIN Splash Filter sink faucet water purifier is designed to remove hard minerals and chlorine from the water, which can cause dryness and flakiness of the skin. The adjustable faucet attachment ensures a comfortable face-washing experience, while also making it easier to clean the sink.

3. Choose the Right Shampoo and Conditioner

Look for products specifically designed for hard water. These usually have chelating agents that help combat mineral buildup and restore your hair’s dazzling glory. Since making the switch, my hair has gone from brittle to beautiful!

Recommendation: Now that you have your amazing new filtering shower head, it is time to restore your hair from the previous damage hard water caused you. I really enjoy Kitsch Strengthening Solid Shampoo and Conditioner with Rice Water Protein. This set does wonders for dry brittle hair, making your hair soft again. They are cruelty-free and free of sulfates, parabens, artificial fragrances, and dyes. Bonus, you will be cutting down plastic waste by opting for solid bars instead.

4. Don’t Skimp on Leave-In Hair Treatments

Leave-in hair oils are my personal heroes. They add an extra layer of protection and nourishment throughout the day. I use a lightweight argan oil that doesn’t weigh my hair down but keeps it glossy and luscious.

Recommendation: Cliganic Organic Argan Oil is magic in a bottle! USDA certified organic and cruelty-free, this magical oil will make your hair feel soft and look shiny. It's lightweight, quick to absorb, and can also be used on your face to relieve dryness.

5. Embrace Rich Body Lotions

After every shower, I slather on a thick, creamy body lotion. It’s essential for locking in moisture and keeping my skin soft and supple. Look for lotions with shea butter or hyaluronic acid—they’re your skin’s best friends!

Recommendation: Indulge in the tropical aroma of lemons and coconut with Everyone Nourishing Hand and Body Lotion, the perfect remedy for dry skin. This lotion is made from natural botanicals and organic ingredients and is free of GMOs, parabens, triclosan, synthetic fragrances, gluten, and cruelty. It's a safe option for everyone to use. If you have rough or dry skin on your elbows, knees, or below the ankles, try Sky Organics Organic Shea Butter. This product offers long-lasting moisture and will soothe and repair your skin.

6. Get on Board with Dry Brushing

Before hopping in the shower, I dry brush my skin. It’s not just great for exfoliation but also stimulates the lymphatic system, which helps your body manage toxins. Plus, it makes your skin super receptive to lotions and creams. Total win!

Recommendation: I am a big admirer of Eco Tools, particularly their makeup brushes which are so soft and gentle. It is no wonder that their body brush has become my favorite. This brush is made from synthetic, cruelty-free bristles and designed with 100% renewable bamboo, making it an eco-friendly choice. It is perfect for your pre-shower routine, as it will effectively exfoliate dry skin while promoting blood circulation and bringing back a natural glow to your skin.

Stay bubbly and optimistic—your beauty routine will thank you!
